Split is a psychological thriller directed and written by M. Knight Shyamalan.

The film follows Kevin Crumb (portrayed by James McAvoy), who is a man with Dissociative Identity Disorder, bearing 23 different personalities. He kidnaps Casey (portrayed by Anya Taylor-Joy) and her two schoolmates who seek escape through Kevin's indwelling counterparts before the arrival of the beast, his ominous 24th personality.

Split is well shot. The cinematography is simple yet effective. There is no excessive use of CG or spectacle. Such is a breath of fresh air these days.

The acting is universally stellar but the standouts are easily McAvoy and Taylor-Joy respectively. McAvoy really did differentiate the multiple personalites well and all were fun to follow. So much so that the film's run time, whatever it my be, was irrelevant to me. I just wanted to see more of these characters.

The film flows well and doesn't seem to lull at any point. The plot is not extremely predictable nor are any twists instantly apparent. It even had small bits of subtle humor with the character of Hedwig.

The premise was interesting and the concepts explored about DID and their biological side effects were compelling.

I find that the 24th personality was a bit of a stretch as he exhibited some supernatural abilities. Consequently, it started to feel like a different movie. Not necessarily a bad different movie but just one of a tone that didn't seem to neatly mesh with the this one. There was also a nod at the end to a previous Shyamalan property that I could've done without.

I think it's safe to say Shymalan is back. Split was simply a fun time.
